How the web shapes us – luxury to a necessity, It’s world wide web day

Observed on 1st August every year, World Wide Web Day is a global celebration of having the ability to browse information spontaneously and freely using the world wide web.

In honour of the day, we take a look at how it all started and how it’s changed how we view technology.

The creation of the world wide web has transformed the lives of people on a global scale. At the mere touch of a button or press of a key, we can easily access information across a wide range of subjects. And thanks to technology, we can now carry out voice and video calls and chat online, without a second thought of how this was never previously possible.

It was back in 1989 that Tim Berners-Lee, an English computer scientist, invented the web. His motivation for its creation was to resolve the issue he had of storing, updating, and finding documents and data files within the company that he was working for – as well as being able to share these externally to enable collaboration outside of the business.

Although it was originally designed for only physicists to share data, it was an instant success when it was released to the general public in 1991. Its popularity grew further when the first website was produced and photos started appearing on the web – the first of which was uploaded by Berners-Lee in 1992.

Thirty-five years on from its inception, what was once a luxury is now a necessity. It’s never been easier to access music, get the latest online news, book a table at your favourite restaurant or even speak to a GP via a video link! And how we access the web has also transformed over time with smartphones, laptops, gaming devices and smart watches making it possible to search information, access songs, find news online, and do thousands of other things that have empowered the world today.
