Commute smarter: Working securely on public transport

Many professionals have turned to working on public transport as a way to maximise productivity during commutes. With laptops, tablets, and smartphones, it’s easier than ever to squeeze in a few extra hours of work while on the go. However, working in public spaces, especially on crowded trains and buses, comes with its own set of challenges—particularly regarding security.

Over the years, as our team has commuted between jobs, we have encountered various pieces of sensitive information on public transport, including HR-related emails, bank account details, and other confidential data that are easily visible to anyone nearby.

  • Visual Hacking: The risk of visual hacking—someone looking over your shoulder and gaining access to sensitive information—is high in crowded spaces. This is especially concerning for those dealing with confidential or sensitive data.
  • Data Breaches: Public Wi-Fi networks are notoriously insecure. Connecting to these networks without proper precautions can expose your devices to hackers.
  • Device Theft: Laptops and tablets are valuable targets for thieves. Keeping your device secure in a crowded environment can be challenging, especially if you’re focused on work.
  • Distractions: It’s easy to become distracted in a bustling environment, increasing the likelihood of accidentally leaving behind your device or documents.

  • Use a Privacy Screen: These filters limit the angles from which your screen can be viewed, protecting against visual hacking.
  • Connect Securely: Avoid using public Wi-Fi. If necessary, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your connection and protect your data.
  • Enable Encryption: Make sure your devices are encrypted. This adds an extra layer of security, ensuring your data remains inaccessible if your device is stolen.
  • Regular Backups: Regularly back up your data to prevent loss in case of device theft or failure.
  • Keep Your Device Close: Always keep your device in sight and securely stored when not in use. Consider using a laptop lock if you frequently work in public spaces.

Balancing productivity with security is key to effectively working on public transport. While it’s tempting to dive straight into tasks, taking a few extra steps to secure your information can save a lot of trouble down the road. With the right tools and practices, you can transform your commute into a productive and secure extension of your workspace.
